How many beers will I get out of a kegerator?

I’m thinking of buying a beverage dispenser for my outdoor kitchen. How many glasses of beer will I get out of a kegerator to know if it’s worth the money? People look to purchase a beverage dispenser/kegerator for a few reasons.

Obviously, it looks impressive and your friends will think you’re cool, but many people love the draft beer taste that can only come from a keg. Then, there’s the money-saving aspect of having your own keg on hand versus buying bottled beer every time you want a frosty cold one or having company coming over. But, how do you know how much money you are saving if you don't run the numbers?

Depending on whether your home kegerator accommodates a full or a pony keg will dictate the number of glasses of beer you will be enjoying. A typical glass of beer comes in a 12-ounce serving. So, when looking at kegs and what you get for the money with a new kegerator, here is the breakdown: a full keg will provide approximately 165 twelve ounce glasses of beer whereas a pony keg provides 82 glasses.

What do some of these grilling terms like, BTU mean?

Before you shop for a new grill for your outdoor kitchen, be sure that you are up to speed on basic terms so that you can make an educated decision. Here’s a crash course in Outdorr Grills 101.

BTU – British Thermal Unit
BTU is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit. Simply, this measurement is used as a tool to indicate how much heat your grill is able to deliver. The BTU rating alone is not enough to determine how much heat a grill is going to put out - you also need to look at the size of the grill. The BTU rating also gives you an idea of much fuel you can expect to burn.

There are two options when it comes to grilling with gas –

NG – Natural Gas
NG is typically connected to the house and although it costs more upfront, you save more during usage. With NG you don’t have to worry about refilling the tank.

LP – Propane Gas/Liquefied Propane
LP is sold in those white 20 pound tanks and cost less at set up, but you will need to refill as needed.

What should I consider when buying an outdoor grill?

Any outdoor kitchen begins with the focal point – the Mack Daddy, the grill. Depending on what type of grill master you are here are a few things to consider when choosing a grill:

Fixed or flexible? Is your new grill going to be a permanent fixture built into an existing countertop structure or do you need the ability to move it? Some models come with wheels for additional mobility.
Size matters. How much space you are working with? Also consider size in terms of capacity. Who are you cooking for? If you have a large family or frequently entertain, you’ll want a larger capacity grill.
Natural gas (NG) or propane gas (LP) grill? NG is typically connected to the house and although it costs more upfront, you save during usage. LP is sold in 20 pound tanks and cost less at set up, but you refill as needed.
